No day is really a 'typical' in prison.

Typical Day of Scott Kellett

The purpose of this page is to try to explain what a typical day is like for me while I am in prison.  I say try because it is impossible to fully explain what it’s like inside these walls; you have to be in here to understand it.  But I do not suggest that any of you get incarnated just to see what prison is like.

I need to also say that for a person of my upbringing and background, there is no such thing as a “typical” day in prison.  It’s just a day that roughly resembles the rest of them.  They usually count us at least 7 times a day; this process can take up to an hour at times.  And we are allowed time at the recreation yard twice a day.  They have machine weights, handball, basketball, soccer, volleyball and plenty of room to run.  I enjoy running and lifting weights.  Now with all that said, here you go:

These events happen to me regardless of work, personal choices, etc..  They are pretty much guaranteed.

12:00 AM Count
3:00 AM Breakfast is served.  They open the doors to the cell and you walk to the chow hall.  I usually only get up and go for peanut butter pancakes.
4:30 AM Count
5:00 AM The announcements over the loudspeaker for which Hoe-Squads (if any – weather dependants) will turn out.  If Hoe-Squad 1 is called, I turn out.
7:00 AM

Provided I don’t go to work, at this time our wind would fall out for showers.  They cram about 100 inmates into a space that has about 60 showers heads.  The water is always at sub-zero temperatures.

8:00 AM Count
10:00 AM Lunch is served.  I always go to lunch.  Especially for pork-chops!
Now, if I did not go out to the fields, we run in at 11:00 AM and eat lunch at 11:30 AM.  I return to my cell by 12:00 pm.
12:00 PM Count
3:30 PM Mail call; this is the most exiting part of the day.  I don’t care what’s going on in here; I only want to hear from y friends and family.
5:00 PM Dinner chow; I always go to dinner.
7:30 PM Count
10:30: PM  Rack Time; Everyone to their cells for the night.
10:30 PM

Count

I spend the majority of my time reading and writing letters.  I attend college course Wednesday and Thursday night from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  On Fridays and Saturdays nights rack times is 1:00 AM.  I watch an average of 15 minutes of TV a day.

What it like inside:

There are 4 rows of cells.  Cell numbers 101 to 122 for 1 row, 202 to 222 for two rows, cells 301-322 for 3 rows, cells 401 to 422 for 4 rows.  The cells are 4 feet across by 8 feet long and 8 feet high with two bunks.  Coming out of the wall, a bottom and top; we have a steel commode with a built in sink against the back wall.  There is one outlet for power, and one socket against the back wall for one light bulb.

Each person in a cell has tow shelves and a locker for their property.  We wash clothes out of the toilet (yes, after washing the toilet) and hand them on the wall to dry.  For each wind (which has 4 rows) there are tow days rooms, one for 1 and 2 row and one for 3 and 4 rows called appropriately, 1 row days room and 3 row day room.

The dayroom has 2 TV’s, benches in front of each TV and 3 to 4 tables.  There is also a urinal and a sink.  One TV is for sports, ect... And the other ones is for Movies, the Spanish channel, ect…The tables are for dominoes, chess, Bible Studies, ect...  A dayroom holds about 50 inmates.  The let you do in the cell and/or ort and to the day room every hour.

Will add more soon, check back.
